Color and Efficient Weaving – Laura Fry

A Good Yarn and Efficient Weaving – Laura Fry

Estimated course cost based on 15 attendees - $150 (includes materials fee)

A Good Yarn

Learn how fibre characteristics, spinning, weave structure and density affect the resulting textile. The theory will be followed by hands-on examination of a variety of yarns and discussion of their particular impact on the weave outcome. The more weavers know about their fibres/yarns, the better able we are to make good choices when creating textiles

You Have to be Warped
This seminar will draw on Laura’s years of making her production weaving as efficient as possible. She will show how she dresses a loom beginning with winding a warp, beaming, threading and also weaving hints and tips.  Participants will have time to practice on demonstration looms. If requested, Laura will provide personal coaching to enhance each person’s weaving technique (Many of us are still benefitting from the tips she provided in her spring ’11 workshop). Attendees should also bring their favorite weaving tools to share with other members of the class.

Supplementary Warp Workshop by Mary Berent

Supplementary warp, or supplemental warp is a technique that opens a world of fabulous design possibilities. It allows the weaver to plan complex patterns that can be woven with only one shuttle. Supplementary warp projects are possible on table looms and two warp beams are not required as there are many innovative methods of tensioning the additional warp threads.

This workshop is a “round robin” style workshop where students bring pre-warped looms and weave samples on the other looms at the workshop as well. Workshop lectures will include information on: warping techniques specific to using supplemental threads, controlling tension on the supplemental warp, appropriate setts for supplemental warps, turning familiar drafts and creating new drafts specifically suited to this technique. While some simple designs are possible on two harnesses (shafts) this technique really blooms to its full potential with four or more harnesses (shafts).
